Great Britain developed its great Empire between the 18th and early 20th centuries, thanks to its supremacy over the seas obtained after neutralizing all competing powers and reaching the most distant corners of the planet. All this was achieved thanks to its powerful fleets both in the mercantile and war fields. In the Anglo-Saxon world, the development of ships was notable, especially from 1700 to the first half of 1900. The Royal Navy, i.e. the English navy, fought various battles to establish itself as the most powerful war navy in the world and, at the same time, a very vast merchant fleet developed to transport passengers and goods to and from the numerous colonies scattered throughout the world. Then the routes from Australia to Canada, from the Far East, to Latin America, from Iceland to South Africa, etc. intensified. and great was the interest of all Anglo-Saxons in seafaring in general. The aristocrats and the rich bourgeoisie acquired their own means of various proportions for their trade and also for leisure and free time. Until the advent of steam, the motion of ships was solely created by exploiting the wind, but even afterwards, for leisure and sport, the sailing ship remained the most characteristic and elegant vessel. For this reason, the images of sailing ships have always been appreciated for the decoration of environments and therefore also reproduced, hand-painted, on precious furnishing objects.
